These are my contact sheets from my first instruction, the over all feeling you get from these is that i need to work on my shooting from the hip. I need to read less into the brief and use it more of a guide line. You can see on these photos that they are very bland and have a lot of school children in them, i would have preferred if i could have got into my town and seen the town liven up at around 3.45. I did miss a nice picture of a ginger in a bush at one point because of my lack of shooting from the hip skills.

The reason i’ve chosen this image is because it captures how dull and lifeless Hillmorton is, this is because of the cold temperature and the old woman on the electric scooter, also i like the way the balloons are there as if they’ve tried to make it a happier place with them.

This image i took is of children biking home from school with there mother, i like this image because you get a sense of love from it, i like this because it proves that the old stereotype does no longer (well shouldn’t) exist, because as you can see women don’t have it easy, a lot of them look after there children and also have a full time job as well. The thing i like about it in particular is the childs expression on the bike, he looks as if he’s almost home and just cannot wait to get back.

This next image you have too look into quite a bit and think back to the past when there was a time when there were slaves, well if you have a look at this picture you can clearly see that this doesn’t exist in this day and age, so from this photo i get a sense that anything is possible that no matter how bad it is things can be resolved, this isn’t a great photo but i really like the contrast through the image and also the childs expression as he’s obviously caught me taking the photo, also the way he’s standing looks as if he is bored and is wanting to go home, considering this was from the end of the shoot means that he’s been out of school for about half an hour. I think i could of improved this image if i was better at shooting from the hip and if the image was sharper.

So from this project i’ve learn’t that i need to work on my shooting from the hip and possibly shoot more photos.

Lab Service Report.

The colour film i used was a Fujicolour X-TRA 400 the information/data sheet is found here.

The colour lab that i went to was boots, i found them to be very helpful in what i needed to know and for the range of services they have, you go into one of the stores and ask them to process the film if you’re processing a pushed film it’ll take a while longer (1 week) if you want it done in the hour it’s a little extra or if not it’s 2 days. They have a range of different options if you want just negatives if you want CD’s or a range of images. You can get them on canvas but it will normally take about 1/2 weeks. The service was very helpful and they answered any questions i had about it, for my 26 prints and a cd it was £7.99 which i thought was quite reasonable. This was much better than when i went to jessops where they took about a month to process my pushed 400iso film. I was given the prints and the cd in an envelope and i was very impressed with the quality and the end prints and quality with them.

Over all i found this project difficult, this is because i had to find locations to suit the type of magazine and also had to get my ideas across to the reader. In the end i thought my location worked well and i’m impressed with how it looks with the dramatic crops and the urban edit. The main reason i wanted urban for the editorial was because i planned to have skateboarder’s but first of all i was just going to have them sitting down and having the skateboards near them but then i thought i could have a couple like that and then some with them actually skating. I didn’t need lighting for this location but i did take some just incase the weather took a turn for the worst. This location was difficult to find and also when i took the location shots without the model they didn’t look like anything special so i had to explain what i wanted to get from it. In the end everything worked out well and i’m happy with it, things that could’ve gone better were that i changed my focal length for some shots and they turned out a bit different in the composition but i think i’m just being picky.

For the Henley workshop we went to the college and had a look around the site to see what locations we could find, then after that some fashion students came out then we took them to the locations while explaining on the way what we would like from then and how to work the location. For the college workshop we had to go out and take locations shots around the college, we did this to get an understanding of what we would need to do for the brief. For me this helped me get an idea of how we were suppose to do this by going to the location and taking pictures of the surroundings and also thinking about where the model would go once i had them there.

For the publication i opened it up in In Design and then cropped the photos in photoshop then placed them into in design the only thing that i found annoying is that i had to re-edit them after cropping them so they would still look nice in the magazine. I think it works we because i have 2 pictures in the same location and they are placed at both sides of the A3 layout which creates a sort of boarder. Then at the top of the page i have a picture of them both sitting on there skateboards and then another of Tony doing a trick.

Final photos from the shoot, edited ready for the editorial magazine. I think these are nice photos and will work nice in the magazine. Over all the photo shoot went well and the weather kept up so i didn’t need the flash gun in the end.

Social Scene.

For my social scene i think things could’ve gone better, when i developed my film i realised that my film camera hasn’t worked very well and i only had a total of 8 photos to choose a final 5, some of them were nice and i’ve caught a moment of something happening, one of them is a man picking up and swinging his child around which is really nice in black and white, then in the background you can see a woman eating an ice cream this makes you automatically think that it’s a fun day out for the family just by looking at the photo.

This picture is nice because of the fun that is in the expression of the man and the way that you can’t see the kids face but you still get a sense of happiness from the image.

In this image it looks like the two men are arguing but they’re actually dancing, the reason i like this image is because you can’t tell whats going on, this is because one of the men has his mouth open and looks like he’s shouting but the man on the left looks quite happy, you would only get this if you read into the image.

For this image i like the contrast throughout it and the way it’s mainly just back and white instead of different tones. The reason i’ve chosen this one is because you’re not to sure what is going on in the tent so you look deeper into the image and find more detail and texture in the image.

For this image i liked it more for the people in the image because theres a man with a hat thats walking past the stall but when you look at the woman running the stall shes completely opposite which shows the contrast in the image with tones and composition.

For me this feels like a nice documentary image, it gives a sense of it being a warm day then everything feels frozen because the sign looks like it was moving but has been stop from the fast shutter speed. Then theres no one looking at the camera but there all just carrying on normal and have no idea that i’ve taken the photo.

Over all i think it went well shooting but i wish i could’ve gotten all the images from that day because there were defiantly some more stronger ones compared to these weaker ones, apart from that i think i did well catching some moments that others may have missed.

Kitchen Photography.

For the kitchen documentary photography we used a 400 ISO black and white film pushed to 1600 ISO, this had a nice effect on the out come and made it feel more personal toward the kitchen staff in the pictures. I think that the shoot went well because i got some really nice shots of them at work and caught moments that i other wise would’ve missed if i was looking outside of my view finder, this has shown me the importance of constantly shooting so that i don’t miss a moment in documentary photography, this should depict in my newest documentary photography with my social scene.

For this photo i found it hard to expose the bag with contrast because there was a lot of light coming through the window especially with pushing the film, i like this one because it looks very much like the documentary with not much focus on the face but instead in what she’s doing which is why i like the reflective bag.

The reason i’ve chosen this one out of my film is because you can see the women at work but then with the light coming through the window it looks like its lighting up the food in the wrappers which has a nice effect.

This photo is very much focused on the work that the kitchen staff are doing, this is because it just has the hands in it, i think this photo has a nice effect because the ‘flora’ tub is lit up compared to the rest of the image.

I think this is my strongest image because the light coming in from the left reflecting of the shinny table but then you can see him working on the sushi and preparing the food, this works because even though there is a person in the shot your eye still go to what he’s doing.

Evaluation of location shots.

I think that not all my locations look good without a model in them so i think personally i’ve done quite well because for all of them i’ve had quite nice and imaginative idea’s. The reason my locations are not that interesting is because i wanted to challenge myself with new ideas, the only problem with this is that ideas can turn into something else once you have the model there and that if i was showing them to people it’s hard to get whats in my mind across to them. Over all i think that my locations are not the best to look at but once the model is there they will be brought to life.

Social Scene Research.

For my social scene i’m going to do the peace festival, i’ve chosen this because there is always a range of people and the fact that it’s suppose to be fun i’ll catch people having a good time and having fun, i’ll be shooting this with a 400 iso black and white film pushed to 1600 this will give it a grannie look to it. I think it’ll work well with black and white because it gives it more of a documentary feel and also gives it character. I’ve done some research into social scenes and have been too a market in cornwall, for the social scene i shoot from the hip so that you can get people in the shot more natural and not looking at the camera.

These photos are from a market/car boot sale, I like the contrast in these images and the way that the people didn’t know i was taking the photos and thats why some people are part way through conversation, i think the warm effect works well because it makes it look like it’s been taken with a film camera.

Documentary Photography.

The photographer i’ve chosen to look into is Ed Thompson, the reason i’ve chosen him is that he’s quite young and he is one of the few that aspire me to go out and do documentary photography. The one of the royal wedding was shot really nice and creatively, theres one photo of a tent and a woman and a baby in there from this photo i get a sense that they’ve been waiting there ages and would’ve done anything to be there, they might have traveled far to be there. They are also very proud that they’re from england because they have loads of flags and almost all there possessions have the countries flag on it. These coluored photos have an impact on me because they’re fun instead of the normal documentary photos of riots which are powerful and make you feel the emotion they are feeling but don’t inspire me.

For the black and white documentary i’ve chosen Robert M Johnson, the reason i’ve chosen him is that his work gives you a feel as you were there and a sense of what the people are feeling. Robert M Johnson pushes his black and white film so it’s quite grannie, this has a good effect though because it makes it look older and more historical like everything he’s shot is for a purpose. One of his photos of a security man with his leg up on a post makes you feel like he’s protecting the store behind him and is trying to look more powerful by making himself more seen, you get all that from a black and white photo. Another thing that i love about his photography is the hight level of contrast though out the images from heavy blacks to light whites then loads of tones in between.

For my final shoot i’ve chosen to do the location at the hospital with a skater, some of my other idea’s for this location is that i’ll have one sitting down out of focus then behind them there’ll be another person doing a trick.

I this worked well, it was nice lighting and had a great atmosphere with everyone else there. The photos were nice and urban like i wanted, this really came alive once editing them and looks really nice in the layout.
